Drive-up Mailbox at Gateway will not be removed

Post Office reverses plan to remove it following pleas from residents, GRF

(Thursday, Nov. 16, 11:30 a.m.) The drive-up U.S. Postal Service mailbox at Gateway will not be removed, the Walnut Creek postmaster said last week.

Earlier this month, a notice appeared on the drive-up mailbox announcing it would be removed because of underuse. Since then, the Walnut Creek Post Office has received a lot of calls from residents and a visit from GRF staff asking that the decision be reconsidered.

Candace Champion-Forbes, the Walnut Creek postmaster, notified GRF last week that removal of the collection mailbox at Gateway was permanently canceled, effective Nov. 7. GRF was not notified of the decision until Nov. 15. The notice about the planned removal was still on the box as of Wednesday, Nov. 15.

“My apologies again,” Champion-Forbes wrote, “those signs should have been removed on the 8th of November.”

She noted that both the walk-up and drive-through mailboxes at Gateway will remain.
