‘Long line’ technique helps PG&E upgrade power lines

by Rossmoor News

Tuesday, September 3 (10:30 a.m.): Pacific Gas & Electric workers lowered from a helicopter conducted safety and reliability work on transmission lines in the Rossmoor area on Aug. 16, replacing and maintaining equipment.

The crews used what PG& E spokesperson Tamar Sarkissian called the “industry- changing long line technique,” invented by the company’s workers. It consists of lowering line workers from a helicopter to the top of power lines to make adjustments or repairs.

“PG& E uses the long line technique to complete select projects in a safe and efficient manner,” Sarkissian said in an email to the News. “Helicopter use reduces heavy trucks and equipment on the ground, lessening environmental impacts.

“In some cases, the method allows for line workers to reach otherwise difficult-to-access locations. The work conducted in this manner ensures the safety and reliability of PG& E’s electric system.”
